There is no single reason why imprisonment has been increasing, but what we know is that ‘tough on crime’ policies have been a contributing factor.” It also investigates the benefits and costs of imprisonment and, what, if any, are the alternatives. System targets.įind out more by reading our latest research paper.ĭespite falling crime rates, imprisonment in Australia is at a historic high.Ī report released today by the Productivity Commission says this is happening across all states and territories. ![]() Our report looks at a range of options that have been trialled That can keep the community safe at a lower cost. ![]() Given the very high cost of imprisonment it is sensible to look at alternatives Violent offences 58% offenders in prison 2020. Prisons play an important role in keeping the community safe from violent offenders but many people in prison are considered low risk to the community. So why do we have less crime but more people in prison?Ī big factor is 'tough on crime' policies such as making bail harder to access and mandatory minimum prison sentences. Keeping people in jail is expensive, around $330 per prisoner per day. In fact the incidence of many types of crime has been falling. So, is Australia experiencing some kind of crime wave? Australia is 3rd in OECD Imprisonment rate growth between 2003-2018. So Am I a bad person? or they are just forcing me to have the same views to them.Over the last 20 years our imprisonment rates have increased by more than 35 per cent and our imprisonment numbers are growing faster than almost every other developed country. So is being neutral in some Political and social issues. Its just that people will see you as a bad person because your not being vocal, I dont like being vocal at all and I’ll remain that way. For example I always respected Men, Women, LGBT equally and thats how I show support. Most of the time I just dont give a fuck about them but sometimes it just really gets on my nerves that they are forcing you to have the same political and social views to them. And its always been that way and they would post shit on twitter that you did not support this views and you would get shit on school. You did not speak about the LGBT community then you are bad. You dont support the Men are trash movement then you are bad. They want equality but tend to want women supremacy (you dont support this then your a bad person) Your not talking about our political climate (You hate the government then your good, You stay neutral then you are bad). I dont think that should be the basis to know if the person is good or bad. So the majority of students in my school are very vocal about these issues and I dont have a problem with that, It only starts to piss me off, if they spread shit about you that you are not talking about these issues thus your a bad person. Im on Highschool and I’ve always stand Neutral or not being vocal to anything Political and Social issues related, I am the type of person who look at both sides and always stay Unbias to everything. I understand that this example I took is a bit kf cherrypicking here but are there any other practical issues that social gender would cause and what would be the possible solutions for these problems? Would it be borderline impossible for law enforcement to prove that it is not genuine claim and not get into a scandal of discrimination? One of the mentioned examples was this: there is a man convicted for a crime, shortly after the trial he starts claiming that he now identifies himself as a woman and he should be put into prison for women instead of men's prison putting him into a probably safer environment. There has been various examples of varying amount of logic, especially regarding the cases where people would try to abuse the system for their own benefit. Now, I am fully aware that people have different opinions on the subject due to their understanding of gender, family, their religious and social background but I am more interested in practical issues here. In fact, in my country there has been a lot of discussions on the issue of Stambul Convention and various concepts presented in it, such as socially constructed gender. So, before anything goes ugly, I am not supporting either side here.
